Build a Backyard Haven: Welcoming Birds and Beneficial Bugs (Without Inviting Pests Inside)

As New England yards revive, it’s the ideal time to attract birds, bees, and butterflies—while keeping pests (ants, ticks, mosquitoes) out of your home. Use this checklist to make your backyard work for you this season.

✓ Plant with pollinators in mind

Select native New England perennials and shrubs blooming from spring to fall. Cluster 3–5 of the same plant for easy pollinator access. Layer beds—tall plants in back, groundcovers up front—to mimic nature.

✓ Add water and a little wild shelter
Place a bird bath by shrubs for safety. Use a shallow saucer with stones for bees and butterflies. Leave a rough corner—brush, leaves, or tall grass—for insect and frog shelter, minimizing maintenance.

✓ Lighten your chemical footprint in the yard
Spot-treat issues instead of spraying everywhere. Target pest control on your home’s perimeter and problem areas, letting beneficial insects thrive outdoors while pests stay out.

✓ Keep your foundation zone clean and open
Keep mulch, shrubs, and wood a foot from your foundation. Trim branches touching the house. Place wildlife-friendly plantings in the back of the yard—maintain tidy, open areas near your home.

✓ Make it a family project
Let kids pick a plant, paint a birdhouse, or fill a feeder. Add one new native plant or pollinator spot each season. Enjoy more birds, butterflies, and time in your yard—with less effort.

Creating a backyard haven is an ongoing journey—every small step makes a difference for local wildlife and your family’s comfort. By planting thoughtfully, minimizing chemicals, and maintaining a clean foundation, you’ll enjoy a vibrant outdoor space all season long. Remember, it’s about balance: welcome the visitors you want, keep pests outside, and savor your time outdoors.
